What is an AI audit, and what should it include?

An AI audit is a short study of how a business works that finds the repeated tasks AI could take, ranks them by the hours they cost and the risk of automating them, and ends in a written plan. A useful audit names one first workflow, the number to measure, and what must stay with people.

Why do an AI audit before buying AI tools?

Because the expensive mistake is automating the wrong thing. Many businesses buy a chatbot or an AI subscription first and look for a use afterwards. An audit starts from the work: what repeats, how often, how long it takes, and what goes wrong. The tool comes last.

What should a useful AI audit include?

  1. Repeated tasks: a list gathered from the people who do them, not only from managers.
  2. Hours: what each task costs per month, even as an estimate.
  3. Risk: for each task, what happens if the AI gets it wrong, and who would notice.
  4. What stays with people: decisions, money, complaints and expert advice.
  5. One first workflow: with the number that will show whether it worked, such as reply time or hours spent.
  6. What you provide: accounts, files, approvals and a person who owns it.

What should an audit not do?

  • Promise savings before anything is tested.
  • Recommend automating everything at once.
  • Change anything in your live systems.
  • Lock you into the auditor’s own build. The plan should be usable by anyone.

How do you prepare for one?

List the tasks your team complains about repeating, collect a few real examples of each with private details removed, and make the people who do the work available for an hour. The better the examples, the more specific the plan.

Is an AI audit the same as an IT audit?

No. An IT audit checks systems and security. An AI audit looks at the work people do and which parts of it AI could take safely.

Who should be involved?

The owner or manager who decides, and the people who actually do the repeated work, because they know where the time goes.
