What AI cannot do for a small business.
AI cannot replace judgement, relationships, expert advice or a clear process. It is good at repeated, well-defined work such as first replies, data entry and drafts, and poor at anything rare, vague, high-stakes or not written down.

What is AI good at in a small business?
- Replying to common questions with facts it has been given.
- Reading documents and filling drafts or spreadsheets.
- Summarising calls, emails and long documents.
- Producing first drafts of posts, emails and reports.
- Sorting and routing messages to the right person.
What can AI not do?
- Make judgement calls. Whether to give a discount, take a risky order or forgive a late payment needs a person who knows the business.
- Build relationships. Customers trust people. AI can make sure nobody waits, but closing and keeping a customer is human work.
- Give expert advice safely. Medical, legal, tax and financial questions need a qualified person.
- Fix a broken process. Automating a confused process makes the confusion faster. The process has to be clear first.
- Know what is not written down. AI works from the information it is given. If the answer lives in one person’s head, the AI does not have it.
- Be right every time. AI makes mistakes, so anything that matters needs a check and a way to hand over to a person.
How do you use AI safely, then?
Give it one well-defined job, the facts it needs, clear limits on what it must never do, and a person to hand over to. Measure one number before and after. Expand only when that works.
